What is a birth chart?
A birth chart — or natal chart — is a map of the sky at the precise time and place you were born. It records where the Sun, Moon and every planet sat among the twelve zodiac signs, and slices the sky into twelve houses, each governing an area of life. Where a Sun-sign horoscope reads just one point, a full birth chart reads the whole sky at once — which is why it feels so much more personal. Two people born on the same day can have completely different Moon and Rising signs.
Your Big Three: Sun, Moon & Rising
- ☀️Sun — your core identity, ego and life force. The “you” at your center.
- 🌙Moon — your inner emotional world, instincts and what makes you feel safe.
- 🌅Rising (Ascendant) — the mask you wear: your first impression and how you meet the world.
Together these three are the fastest way to understand someone. Your Sun and Moon need only your birth date and time; your Rising sign needs your exact birth time and place because it changes every couple of hours.
Planets, houses & aspects
Beyond the Big Three, each planet colors a part of you: Mercury your mind and speech, Venus your love and taste, Mars your drive, Jupiter your luck and growth, Saturn your lessons and discipline. The twelve houses say where in life that energy shows up — from self and money to relationships and career. Aspects are the angles between planets — conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition — describing how the different parts of you cooperate or create tension.
Why an exact birth time matters
The Sun moves about one degree a day, so your Sun sign is stable. But the Moon changes sign every two-and-a-half days, and the Rising sign shifts every two hours as the Earth turns. That’s why your birth time and place unlock the most personal parts of your chart. Don’t know your time? You’ll still get accurate Sun and planet signs — this calculator simply flags the parts that need a time.
